Rossini - Messa di Gloria
II. Gloria in excelsis DeoAcademy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields
Sir Neville Marriner, cond.Rossini composed a significant amount of vocal and instrumental music outside the realm of opera; his most famous liturgical work is probably the Stabat Mater, written in 1845. But he was still quite active as an operatist in when in 1819-20 he produced his Messa di Gloria, a setting of the first two prayers of the mass ordinary. It was premiered at the Chiesa di San Ferdinando of Naples in March 1820, and the composer’s highly operatic treatment of the liturgy in this and certain other works was the subject of much scandal.
