Kurt Eichhorn, cond.Carl Orff’s first opera occupied his efforts during the time when his famed Carmina Burana was being premiered. It recounts a Grimm fairy tale in which four brothers who live in a country where it is pitch black at night visit a neighboring land to discover that a mysterious light fastened to the top of the tree illuminates the darkness there. They decide to steal it for their own country—to disastrous consequences, of course. Fans of Orff’s well-known cantata may recognize strong similarities with the instrumental dance which opens the Uf dem Anger section of that work.
LOVE THIS, LOVE CARMINA, GONNA GO TRIBAL DANCE TO IT.
